About me and my interests:
- I was born in Devon, and also spent part of my teenage
years there. I have also lived in Birmingham (besides
going the University there), Surrey, Berkshire,
Sheffield, and Kent. I now live in West Tarring, which is part of
Worthing in West Sussex.
- I graduated from the University
of Birmingham in 1965 with a BSc in Civil
Engineering.
- I am a Chartered Civil Engineer,
and a Chartered Water Engineer,
and worked in the Water Industry from 1965 to 2002, when
I took early retirement. After periods in Berkshire and
Sheffield, in 1975 I moved to my Southern Water,
which provides water services in the south east of
England (Kent, Sussex, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight),
working at different times in offices in Maidstone,
Chatham, Worthing, Falmer and Crawley, as well as having
a spell on site in the Isle of Sheppey. For the last 20
years of my employment, I was heavily involved in
computing, including providing information for the
company's intranet.
- My major interest is church music, having been a treble
in Honiton Parish Church Choir in the 1950's, and a
member of school and University choirs subsequently. I am
now a member of the St
Andrew's Church Choir, West Tarring. I used to sing
as a bass, but with the Choir having lost its two tenors,
I am now singing in that voice. My eldest and youngest
daughters, Lizzy and Caroline, are also members of
the Choir, and Katie was a member when she was younger.
- My other main interests are transportation,
particularly in railways, tramways, and trolleybuses, and
in English Ale, which has had an
upturn in its fortunes since the low days of the 70's,
when so many breweries passed into history. I also enjoy
French and Belgian beers, and have the occasional day
trip to the Continent with a few of my friends.
- Over the years, I have owned several Citroën cars: a
Dyane, a GS Estate, two CX Familiales, a BX Estate, an XM
hatchback, a Xantia Estate, and a C5 Estate SX. I now
possess a C5
Estate Exclusive, which uses an improved version of
the suspension system used in the XM, and also an AX hatchback.
